    Heritage and national identity

     

    Just as Light and Dumbraveanu-Andone (1997) said, within heritage studies the relationship between national identity and national heritage is frequently taken as axiomatic. The relationship between heritage and identity is very interesting issue. Light and Dumbraveanu-Andone (1997) also mentioned that the construction of national heritage belongs to the nation-building, and historic buildings and monuments can be an obvious symbols of national identity.

     

    As known that identity is a central element of the heritage tourism at national, regional, and personal levels. Intangible heritage such as gastronomical traditions can help to reinforce national character (Bessiere, 1998; Cusack, 2000; Holtzman, 2006; Pilcher, 1996; cited in Timothy & Ron, 2013). Djumaev (2005) indicated that musical heritage helps to contribute to national identity as well. Similar to national and personal ipseity, there are evidences shows that local identity can be maintained and societal memory preserved through food-related stories and cooking methods (Timothy & Ron, 2013). As Smith (1991, cited in Light and Dumbraveanu-Andone 1997) point out that national identity is undoubtedly important for many people in giving them a feeling of belonging and identifying with a particular group and at the same time being different from other groups. Culture heritage could help people to identify themselves, such as food festivals and ethnic restaurants of their homeland help immigrants to maintain their connections of motherland (Timothy & Ron, 2013).

    Thank you Heran, food heritage as part of a national identity was interesting to read. It is one of the basic parts of experiencing a place, and therefore a basic part of the tourists experience. I really like the text with a picture, somehow I was hoping for more cultural knowledge, but that is just my own interpretation of seeing the picture. However, I would use an example case to refer to. Thanks for the article.
